The Lotus Flower

The lotus flower (also know as the Nelumbo nucifera) is a flower originating from Asian nation as well as some parts of Queensland and Australia.  Lotus flowers are commonly mistaken for waterlilies, which are an entirely different plant.  While the two look similar the difference is in the middle.  Lotus flowers have a distinctive seed pod differentiating itself from the waterlily.

In ancient times the lotus flower was considered a symbol of sexual purity as well as detachment from worldly pleasures. Most deities of the Asian religions are represented with a lotus flower, because of its believed connection to the supernatural.
